As a follow on to our recent article on healing gemstones, we've done a deep dive on our mix of favorite stones, their symbolic meanings, and spiritual associations. And, just a reminder, that while gemstones are often referred to as "healing", there is no scientific or medical evidence that gemstones can heal physical diseases. (As a matter of opinion, however, what can heal are the thoughts, intentions, and associations produced by the ~3 lb, tofu-like organ that lives in your skull and operates like an internal pharmacy. That, my friends, is a topic for another time.) As we like to say here at Present Gems, the stone holds the intention or meaning, and the wearer activates it through attention and action.

Traditional "Healing" & Metaphysical Associations of Gemstones

 African Turquoise

Often called the Stone of Evolution. Despite its name, African Turquoise is actually a jasper, not true turquoise. It is traditionally associated with transformation, awakening, growth, and positive change. Often chosen as a companion during periods of personal evolution and new beginnings.

Amazonite

Often called the Stone of Courage and Truth. Associated with calm, emotional balance, communication, and self-expression. Traditionally believed to help soothe worry and encourage confidence in speaking one's truth.

Andesine

Associated with balance, vitality, creativity, and transformation. In crystal traditions, it is sometimes viewed as a stone that helps bridge opposing energies and supports emotional resilience and positive change.

Chrysocolla

Often associated with communication, wisdom, feminine energy, and emotional expression. Traditionally believed to encourage speaking one's truth with compassion, release emotional patterns, and foster inner peace and self-awareness.

Hematite

A grounding stone associated with stability, strength, focus, and protection. Traditionally believed to help anchor scattered energy, promote mental clarity, and encourage a sense of calm and centeredness.

Howlite

Associated with calm, patience, mindfulness, and emotional balance. Traditionally believed to quiet an overactive mind, ease tension, and encourage a more peaceful state of being. Often used as a stone of reflection and awareness.

Jasper

Often called the Supreme Nurturer. Associated with grounding, stability, courage, protection, and emotional strength. Different varieties carry distinct symbolism—red jasper with vitality and courage, ocean jasper with joy and emotional balance, and picture jasper with grounding and connection to nature.

Laboradorite

Known as a stone of transformation, intuition, and protection. Associated with spiritual awareness, inner strength, and navigating periods of change. Often believed to help shield one's energy and encourage trust in intuition.

Moonstone

Known as a stone of intuition, feminine energy, new beginnings, and emotional balance. Traditionally associated with the cycles of the moon and believed to support inner wisdom, emotional awareness, and graceful transitions.

Rose Quartz

Known as the Stone of Unconditional Love. Associated with love, compassion, emotional healing, self-love, and harmony. Traditionally believed to open the heart to deeper connections with oneself and others while encouraging gentleness and emotional balance.

Sunstone

A joyful stone associated with vitality, confidence, optimism, abundance, and personal power. Traditionally believed to inspire enthusiasm, encourage independence, and help the wearer embrace their inner light.

Tourmaline

Different colors have different associations, but tourmaline broadly represents protection, grounding, and energetic balance. Black tourmaline is particularly associated with protection and grounding; pink tourmaline with love and emotional healing; green tourmaline with growth, abundance, and the heart.

Turquoise

A revered stone across many cultures, traditionally associated with protection, healing, wisdom, and spiritual connection. Often viewed as a stone of communication and emotional balance, turquoise is also believed to encourage inner peace and protect the wearer during journeys and transitions.
